HelpNLD is a community that shares up-to-date and accurate information to help individuals with Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NLD), their families, and professionals (clinicians, educators) who work with individuals with NLD. The ultimate goal is to empower individuals with NLD to their fullest potential and thrive in the society. Another goal is to educate the public so that NLD is universally recognised with formal diagnosis and people with NLD can get covered for research-based clinical interventions that can help them integrate better in real life.

Research shows that in 2015-2016, 13% of American public school students received special education due to learning disorders (National Centre for Education Statistics). During the same period, one in six, or 16% of total comprehensive school Finnish pupils received special education support (Statistics Finland). Many more have struggled with learning disorders but never have been diagnosed.

NLD is often undiagnosed at elementary schools where reading ability is used as the first indicator for performance. Individuals with NLD often have highly advanced verbal skill but have problems with social, emotional, motoric, cognitive and visual-spatial problems. Therefore, it is often difficult to diagnose NLD until the late elementary school years.

To further complicate the problem, NLD is often misdiagnosed with other disorders that have overlapping symptoms such as Asperger syndrome (AS), attention deficit disorder (ADD), obsessive compulsion disorder (OCD) and autistic disorder. Research has shown that early intervention can result in the best outcomes for people with NLD. Otherwise, NLD can cause secondary neurobiological disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic depression and suicidal tendency.

The common misdiagnosis or lack of diagnosis resulting in lack of early intervention is mainly due to lack of information and education about NLD for parents, teachers, medical professionals.

Aware of this challenge, HelpNLD offers a variety of information

  • helpful articles, studies, research results, books backed up by notable researchers and experts on NLD.

  • instructional how-to videos, practical tips to apply to everyday life

Anton Ngo, Founder

When I was a young boy, I used to have spatial and motoric problems, such as recognising directions, remembering roads, and using kitchen utensils. Although I have grown out of those difficulties, I can relate easily to people who have NLD. My curiosity has led me to read research papers, books, and interview professionals such as teachers, neuropsychologists, clinicians about the topic of NLD. It starts as a curiosity about a part of me, then I realise that I need to channel what I know to help so many people with NLD out there.
